Sidewall Conveyor; A Revolution in Inclined Material Handling

Sidewall Conveyor, or Corrugated Sidewall Belt Conveyor, is an engineering masterpiece that has pushed the boundaries of bulk material handling.

With its unique design consisting of a main belt, two corrugated accordion-like sidewalls, and transverse cleats (baffles), this equipment can convey materials at incredible angles up to 90 degrees completely vertically, without a single particle spilling or sliding back.

Imagine a production line where previously, to transfer materials from the factory floor to the third floor, you had to use three separate devices (a horizontal conveyor, a bucket elevator, and another horizontal conveyor), tolerating dust, material spillage, and efficiency loss at every transfer point.

Now, with a single Sidewall Conveyor, you take materials directly from the bottom and carry them to the desired height with a steep, breathtaking incline. This means eliminating three motors, eliminating dozens of rollers, eliminating hundreds of dust leakage points, and most importantly, a significant increase in the reliability of your production line.

Kian Industry, in cooperation with Ceylan Makina and using genuine European belts (Fenner, ContiTech, or Ammeraal Beltech), designs and manufactures Sidewall Conveyors that work trouble-free for years in cement, gypsum, coal and iron ore mines, power plants, food and chemical industries, animal feed factories, and even waste recycling systems. What truly makes this equipment extraordinary is the combination of mechanical simplicity with incredible power.

The special belt with corrugated sidewalls not only keeps materials on the incline but also, due to its flexibility, easily bends and unbends around drive and idler pulleys. On the return path, the sidewalls fold up, taking up very little space. The end result is a machine that is powerful, compact, energy-efficient, and extremely reliable. It doesn’t matter whether your material is hot clinker at 200°C or ultra-sensitive sugar powder, iron ore pellets with a specific weight of 3 t/m³, or wood chips and plastic waste.

Kian Industry’s Sidewall Conveyor is manufactured precisely according to your needs, with the correct belt material selection (wear-resistant rubber, heat-resistant, oil-resistant, or food-grade stainless steel) and precise dimensioning (belt width from 400 to 2000 mm, sidewall height from 40 to 315 mm).

The Sidewall Conveyor, or Corrugated Sidewall Belt Conveyor, is one of the most advanced and compact material handling systems that uses a special belt with transverse cleats and corrugated sidewalls to convey materials at very steep angles up to 90 degrees. This revolutionary equipment has transformed conveyor line design because it can replace a combination of several conveyors and elevators, dramatically reducing factory floor space. Kian Industry, leveraging Ceylan Makina's technical expertise and high-quality European belts, designs and manufactures Sidewall Conveyors that are widely used in cement, gypsum, mining, food, chemical, and recycling industries.

What is a Sidewall Conveyor and How Does It Work?

A Sidewall Conveyor consists of a special rubber belt with two corrugated sidewalls (accordion-shaped) and a series of transverse cleats between them. This unique structure allows materials to be conveyed at very steep angles (up to 90 degrees vertical) without spillage or slippage. The working mechanism is as follows: the belt moves over drive and idler pulleys, and materials are loaded onto the belt from the inlet hopper at the lowest point. As the belt moves upward, the sidewalls and transverse cleats prevent material from sliding backward, safely conveying it to the discharge point at height. At the discharge point, the belt deviates from the straight path and materials fall into the outlet hopper. Kian Industry manufactures this equipment with the highest quality standards using genuine European belts (from Fenner, ContiTech, or Ammeraal Beltech).

One of the biggest advantages of this system is the elimination of multiple sequential conveying devices. For example, to convey materials from ground level to the third floor of a factory, you would typically need a horizontal conveyor, a bucket elevator, and another horizontal conveyor. With a Sidewall Conveyor, a single device is sufficient to take materials from the bottom and carry them directly to the third floor with a steep incline. This not only reduces equipment costs but also eliminates multiple transfer points (which are the main sources of dust and material spillage) and significantly increases production line efficiency.

History of Sidewall Conveyor Manufacturing and Its Origins

The idea of the sidewall conveyor dates back to the 1960s, driven by the mining and construction industries' need to convey materials in confined spaces and at high angles. Before this system was invented, the only way to convey materials to heights was using bucket elevators or combinations of multiple conveyors, which occupied a lot of space and had high capital and maintenance costs. The first successful patent for the sidewall belt was registered in 1970 by the German company ContiTech. In the 1980s, this technology rapidly expanded into cement, steel, and coal-fired power plant industries. Japanese and American companies also developed more advanced models capable of handling hot and abrasive materials. In the 2000s, Kian Industry, in cooperation with Ceylan Makina, introduced this technology to Iran and, by localizing it, was able to meet the needs of domestic industries with competitive pricing and high quality. The main reasons for developing this equipment were to significantly reduce the space occupied by conveying equipment, reduce energy consumption (using one motor instead of three), and reduce pollution and dust points in factories. Today, the Sidewall Conveyor is used as a smart and economical solution in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Applications of Sidewall Conveyors in Various Industries and Unmatched Advantages

Cement and Gypsum Industry: Conveying clinker, gypsum, pozzolan, and clay from the mine to the crusher and from the crusher to silos. With angles of 60 to 90 degrees, factory floor space is freed up and structural costs are reduced.

Mining Industries: Conveying iron ore, copper, gold, coal, bauxite, and other minerals from deep mines to the surface or from the surface to trucks and trailers. The ability to install in confined spaces and on steep slopes has made this device the top choice for underground mines.

Agriculture and Animal Feed Industries: Conveying wheat, barley, corn, soybeans, meal, and animal feed pellets to storage silos and from silos to production lines. Sidewalls prevent grain spillage, and special food-grade belts (with FDA certification) are available.

Chemical and Petrochemical Industries: Conveying chemical powders, granules, fertilizers, activated carbon, and resin. The enclosed system (with cover) prevents dust leakage and environmental pollution.

Recycling and Waste Industry: Conveying municipal waste, plastic scrap, paper, cardboard, and shredded rubber. The Sidewall Conveyor can handle bulky and lightweight materials on steep slopes without spillage.

Coal-Fired Power Plants: Conveying coal from storage to the boiler and conveying ash from the bottom of the boiler to disposal sites.

Key Advantages Over Other Conveyors: Up to 70% reduction in occupied space, elimination of multiple devices and transfer points, up to 50% reduction in energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs (single device), reduced dust generation due to elimination of multiple transfer points, ability to install in existing spaces without major structural changes, ability to handle materials with various particle sizes from fine powder to 100 mm pieces, and increased production line safety due to fewer moving parts. Kian Industry offers all these advantages with a 24-month warranty and 10-year support.

In modern production lines, the Sidewall Conveyor is a smart and strategic choice due to its high flexibility, reduced capital and operating costs, and increased reliability. Kian Industry engineers, based on material type, required incline angle, height, and capacity, perform the best design using specialized simulation software and then manufacture the equipment with the highest quality in their fully equipped workshops.
