What is a Load Cell?

A load cell is an electronic sensor for measuring weight and force, manufactured in tension, bending, compression, and torsion types.

What are the Applications of Load Cells?

What is the Structure of a Load Cell?

A load cell consists of a metal core (made of a special alloy) and a number of strain gauges (a set of electrical resistors) that deform under applied force like all materials, but return to their original state after the force is removed. The degree of reversibility of this material determines the quality, accuracy, and longevity of the load cell.

What Does Load Cell Accuracy Mean and How is it Determined?

Load cell accuracy refers to its resolution relative to its total capacity as well as its total error limit. Factors involved in load cell accuracy and quality are the alloy type of the core and the strain gauge structure. The OIML institute, located in Switzerland, evaluates load cell resolution, total error, and load cell behavior under humidity and temperature based on specific standards and determines the load cell accuracy class.

Types of Load Cells

Load cells (in terms of appearance and application) are divided into the following groups:

1- Single-Point Load Cells

They have a single mounting point and are mostly used in retail scales, conveyor weighing, and packaging and filling machinery weighing.

2- Bending Beam Load Cells

Typically used in platform scales, bench scales, weighing systems, carcass scales, as well as hopper and tank weighing.

3- Double-Ended Bending Beam Load Cells

Mostly used in tank weighing, silo weighing, and weighbridge weighing.

4- Tension and Compression Load Cells

Typically used in hanging scales and weighing systems with a tensile nature.

5- Compression Load Cells

Includes canister compression, miniature, and single-point types. Used in batching systems, tank weighing, and railroad scales.

6- Weighbridge Load Cells

Column-type compression load cells, mostly used in tank weighing, silos, and weighbridges.

7- Special Load Cells

Various load cells with special applications such as wire and cable tension estimation, torque sensors, dual-axis sensors, and weighing plates fall into this group.
